Moira

The Dance

Moira leaned toward the rabbit king with an eyebrow raised. “Yes, Tim and I are human. We’re from… Earth,” Moira said. It’s so weird saying that. ‘Hi! I’m from Earth!’ What?

“I’ve never met humans before. Years ago, my great-grandfather said that your kind used to roam freely in our world. Now, I’ve only heard of you in stories. In fact, I finished one, the other day. I believe it was about how you only use a small portion of your brains. What a mockery!” The king chuckled.

“Yeah, that sounds like a lot of people I know.” Moira sat down as she shook her head and raised her eyebrows, recalling all the stupid humans she had come across in her lifetime—too many to count or remember by name.

“Speak for yourself,” Tim muttered quietly enough to avoid most everyone hearing him. He hid behind a cup of water that a rabbit had recently served.

“Tell me, are you all staying here for a while?” King Carrot asked as he munched on an apple, his mouth full.

“We’re on our way to the monastery atop Shiro Peak. We’re traveling there for information,” Araduk answered.

“A monastery? Hmm… I believe I know such a place. Never been there myself, of course. I heard tales of all manner of folk traveling there for the gift of knowledge. What are you hoping to learn there, if you don’t mind my asking?”

Braern finished his drink. “We seek answers of our intertwined destinies and why we have no control over where the portals have taken us.”

“Portals, you say? I know not what you speak of. I do, however, know that mountain you seek. I believe it’s a few days that way.” King Carrot pointed toward the south. The trees hid most of the mountain range many miles away, but the shaded gray was visible in the distance.

“Thank you, King Carrot. We appreciate the help. If you’ll have us, we intend to stay the night and leave in the morning,” Braern announced kindly.

“Of course! You are all welcome here! In fact, we have not had visitors in a long while. Let us celebrate our friendship with a little music!” King Carrot clapped his paws as his ring sparkled in the light.

Several rabbits of varying sizes and different clothing emerged from the castle doors, holding instruments. They played a soft, whimsical melody in the corner by the king.

Araduk blinked and shook his body. He poured the contents of his flask into his cup to not arouse suspicion. “This rabbit ale does nothin’ for me.”

One of the nearby rabbits sniffed him and toppled over, coughing for a moment, then fainted. Araduk peered down at him and shrugged.

Nozomi stared at her feet, hunched over, and picked at her food with her fingers.

“You okay?” Moira asked, looking at the king, then back at her.

The king started a new conversation, asking everyone to raise their cups in a toast to the visitors.

“I am fine. Demo… Danielle loved bunnies. We used to go to petting zoos all the time.
